Kazakhstan is the largest landlocked country in the world, so most long journeys are made by train: Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) runs day and overnight trains with sleeper berths between Almaty, Astana, Karaganda, Shymkent, Turkistan and the far west (Aktobe, Atyrau, Aktau). For the longest distances a domestic flight saves a day, and buses cover the shorter hops. Trains also run from Almaty, Shymkent and Turkistan to Tashkent in Uzbekistan, and the road from Almaty leads to Bishkek and Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan.
